What: Phase
one of the Bean Peaks Gravity Flow Bicycle Trail System
is now open. More than a bike park, this is a first of
it's kind mountain bike trail system in Arizona. Phase
one consists of 9.2 miles if directional trails for
human powered powered bicycles* including adaptive
cycles. The trails are graded green, blue, black for
beginner to advanced difficulty ratings. Directional
trails significantly reduce trail conflicts for
increased safety and fun. There is about 850 feet of
elevation difference between the trailhead and the top
of the peaks. The uphill trail is laid out for a fairly
easy climb to three different hubs on the way up. Each
hub then has different downhill trail options with
advanced trails likely including jumps. Beginning riders can stay on green trails up and down while keeping both tires firmly planted on the ground. Get Loopy: Bean Peaks is not just a one and done roller coaster ride. The idea is that a first timer might try a green loop, then go do it again and again increasing skill, comfort and confidence each time... OR: on the second loop try a blue trail down, and the next time a black... OR: the second time try the next higher hub with a new choice of trails back down, or the next hub and a different combination of trails on the next loop. Get Behind the Effort: The Bean Peaks Trails are work in progress. It has been a remarkable collaboration between the Prescott MTB community,The Prescott National Forest, and the City of Prescott, IMBA, PMBA and an army of volunteers and organizations to get this far. In 2023 over $500,000 was raised for construction. Now Phase Two fundraising is actively underway: the goal is another $500,000 to build 6.9 more miles of trails to add to the system this fall... then that will prime the pump for phase three in 2025. Prescott. It is about 2-1/2 miles South of the
historic Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza (and Whiskey
Row) on AZ State Rte. 89 (White Spar Rd). The Trailhead
is adjacent to the White
Spar Campground on Prescott
National Forest Land. Prescott is known as
Arizona's "Mile High City" We get Snow in the
winter, and it gets hot in the summer, but not the
extremes of Phoenix or Flagstaff. The trailhead is currently under development, while the parking lots are in, bathrooms and water are not yet available (they are coming) for now these amenities may be available nearby at White Spar Campground, or plan accordingly. Mountain biking has deep
roots in the Prescott area. The City of Prescott is a
partner in the Bean Peaks trails effort , and they
maintain an extensive network of their own trails. They
also produce a great trails map available at many
locations around town or on their website here. The Prescott area was a kind of best kept secret until the Whiskey Off-Road came to town. This annual event will draw two thousand participants and a roster of world class Pro's, and it has really put Prescott on the mountain biking map. The Prescott Circle Trail is another cooperative effort between the National Forest and city, and a number of user groups. This 56 mile trail encircles a good part of the city. While It can be ridden in a day, it is not something to attempt without planning and training! The Prescott Trails Challenge is a local trails fundraiser spearheaded by National Champion Mountain bike Racer Chloe Woodruff, and benefiting Prescott Trails. The Prescott Mountain Bike Alliance is our local MTB organization behind many of these great initiatives. Become a member, they do wonderful things! Find them on facebook too They are an IMBA chapter, and were able to bring in many of the resources of the mother organization to assist with the Bean Peaks project. The Over the Hill Gang are volunteer trail builders. There are actually two groups, one that works predominately on Forest Trails, and the other that works on mostly City Trails. The sheer number of volunteers they get can knock out impressive projects in short order... and they have fun doing it! Hook up with them if you get a chance. The Yavapai Trails Association have been involved with all things to do with trails in this area since last century. They build, maintain, and plan for trails, securing grants and doing behind the scenes legwork. Prescott Alternative Transportation works to make Prescott a more bicycle friendly community, and our streets safer for bicycling. The limited bike lanes on White Spar (Hwy 89) are the result of federal transportation enhancement grant funding they brought to Prescott. Most of these organizations / groups can also be found on facebook and other social media sites as well... including Ride Bean Peaks!
